Employer Relocation Packages: What to Expect and How to Negotiate

A job relocation can cost $10,000 to $50,000 or more depending on distance and family size, which is why employer relocation packages exist. But not all packages are created equal, and many are negotiable if you know what to ask for.

What a Typical Relocation Package Includes

Standard relocation packages for mid-level professionals typically include: moving expense coverage ($3,000-$15,000 lump sum or direct payment to movers), temporary housing for 30-90 days, house-hunting trips (1-2 trips with flights and hotel covered), and sometimes a cost-of-living adjustment if moving to a more expensive city. Senior-level and executive packages may also include home sale assistance, spouse career placement, school research services, and lease break coverage. Entry-level positions rarely include relocation benefits, though signing bonuses may serve the same purpose.

Lump Sum vs Managed Relocation

Lump sum packages give you a fixed amount (typically $5,000-$25,000) and let you manage everything yourself. You keep whatever you do not spend but also absorb any overages. Managed relocation packages assign a relocation management company that coordinates movers, temporary housing, and home sale services on your behalf. Managed packages are more comprehensive but less flexible. If offered a lump sum, use our moving cost calculator to estimate actual costs and see if the amount is sufficient before accepting.

How to Negotiate a Better Package

Research the cost of living difference between your current and new city, this is your strongest leverage point. If the new city is 30% more expensive, quantify that impact on your budget. Request specific items rather than a vague "more money." Ask for temporary housing to be extended from 30 to 60 days, request a house-hunting trip if one is not included, or ask for a cost-of-living adjustment built into your salary. Get everything in writing as an addendum to your offer letter. Verbal promises about relocation are difficult to enforce.

Tax Implications of Relocation Benefits

Since 2018, employer-paid relocation benefits are taxable income for most employees. This means a $10,000 relocation package could result in $2,500-$3,500 in additional federal and state taxes. Some employers offer tax gross-ups, which means they pay the extra taxes on your behalf so you receive the full benefit amount. If your employer does not offer a gross-up, budget for the tax hit. Military members are the exception since PCS (Permanent Change of Station) moves remain tax-exempt under federal law.

Understanding Clawback Clauses

Most relocation packages include a clawback or repayment clause requiring you to repay some or all of the benefits if you leave the company within a specified period, typically 1-2 years. Clawback amounts usually decrease over time on a prorated basis. For example, leaving after 6 months of a 2-year clawback might require repaying 75% of the benefit. Read this clause carefully before accepting. If you are unsure about staying long-term, negotiate for a shorter clawback period or a lower repayment percentage.
